The DATA browser book series provides a critical response to current ideas and practices in digital art and technology. We aim to develop this burgeoning field of inquiry by raising new questions about emerging modes of production, immateriality and the formation of subjectivities, while continuing to address older questions and critical methodologies. Much of the focus will be to situate contemporary practices within a historical and social agenda. The series takes theory or criticism not as a fixed set of tools or practices, but rather as a cumulative and evolving chain of ideas, that also recognises the conditions of its own making. In this context, the term “browser” is useful in pointing to the framing device through which most data is now delivered over the information networks. A conventional understanding of “browsing” may suggest surface readings and the passive consumption of material. In contrast, the series celebrates the potential of browsing for dynamic interpretation and “detournement”, the rearrangement of existing material into new configurations.
